The Mirror

The Mirror

by Clancy O’Lafferty

Kootenay

Lake is a Mirror at the rising of the sun

Before the wind comes to Kaslo

Before the boats bob in Balfour

I stand by the Mirror

Drinking in the freshness

Of the water and the pines

Looking at the driftwood here and there

Strange water-sanded shapes

Once trees polished smooth

By the washing of the waves,

delivered here for campfires on the beach.

In between the now and then

Are a million different places

Different faces different voices

Different rooms.

An enigma and a wonder to make

The wisest minds to wander

A maze I’ve muddled through

My thoughts like the driftwood

Are washed smooth by the waters

Of much pondering

I look into the Mirror

A happy little fellow looks back at me laughing

He picks up a smooth, flat stone and throws it

One-two-three-four-five-six-seven times

The-stone-kisses-the-Kootenay

Then gently disappears

And the mirror is shattered momentarily

Before the wind comes to Kaslo

Before the boats bob in Balfour
